Why Do You Need to Be Concerned About Lead?

Lead is a toxic metal that was used for many years in products found in and around our homes. Lead also can be emitted into the air from motor vehicles and industrial sources, and lead can enter drinking water from plumbing materials. Lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. Children six years old and under are most at risk.

Most Common Sources of Lead Poisoning:

  • Deteriorating lead-based paint
  • Lead contaminated dust
  • Lead contaminated residential soil

To help safeguard against the hazards of lead contamination the EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices in April 2008. Effective April 2010 contractors performing renovations, repairs and painting projects that disturb lead based paint in structures built prior to 1978 must be certified and are required to follow specific guidelines to prevent lead contamination.

Before performing renovations, repairs or painting projects in properties built  prior to 1978, Contractors are required to provide to owners, tenants, and child-care facilities a copy of EPA's lead hazard information pamphlet and obtain a signed pre-renovation discloser form from the property owner and/or tenet.
